Super! London gets its ethical groove on…

Excellent news about London being declared a Fair Trade City.  Apparently the largest Fair Trade city in the world, and Boris seems stoked about that: “It’s super news that London is now officially the world’s largest Fairtrade city, with 20 Fairtrade boroughs in the capital.

“It sends a clear message that Londoners want their products to be Fairtrade and to make a significant difference to the lives of farmers and workers in the developing world.”

It is true- people are getting increasingly clued up on the fact that shopping choices can make a huge difference. Lets make it so this Christmas!

Read about it here on the BBC.

Delicious!

I am totally thrilled to reveal two more exhibitors: Fair Cake and Emmeline 4 Re.

Fair Cake specialise in fair trade baked treats and will be bringing Christmas style cup cakes and Fair Trade Christmas pudding. All I have to say about that is . . hold me back!

Emmeline 4 Re is a beautiful new boutique in central London, working with recycled fabrics.

Do check out their beauty.

Find your Ethical Rhythm!

Do have a look at the new exhibitors over on the right hand side, Green Bird and Cat in the Shoe are just two more fabulous attendees.

A few months ago Oxfam put out this cute little piece of animated inspiration. There are a few “rhythms” at the end that we will be promoting at Fair Christmas Fayre- swap, choose Fair Trade, buy second hand. All of these things will help Christmas be a much more sustainable celebration.

Take heart, comrades….

You are not the only ones seeking to do Christmas better! There are quite literally millions of people across the world trying to turn Christmas on it’s bad ass head. I don’t want to bore you with yet moooore statistics… but hey, why not? This is from Friends Provident:

Over 15 million UK shoppers are buying ethical Christmas presents in 07.

That is at one in three people (34%) planning to buy ethical gifts this Christmas.

More than half of those surveyed (57%) also believe that, compared to last year, people are thinking more about ethical matters when buying Christmas gifts.

Throughout the festive period, people will be buying organic fruit and vegetables (37%), Fairtrade or organic coffee (22%) and chocolates (35%) and more than a third (36%) of people will be using organic produce for their Christmas meal.

The festive season is not only about consumerism: over a fifth (21%) are putting ethical gifts on their shopping lists because they think Christmas has become too commercialised, while more than a quarter (29%) think that ethical gifts give more meaning to Christmas or see it as a way of making a difference.

Friends Provident 05 December 2006

It is pretty encouraging to know that there is a movement of people who are standing up against mass produced, poorly traded and unrecyclable goodies in the name of love.

Keep checking the list on the right as more people sign up to come to Fair Christmas Fayre with their stash of ethical Christmas goodness.

Excitedness!

Fair Christmas Fayre is gathering momentum is the most fabulous way! We have already quite a few confirmed stall holders- see the side panel for links to them. Butterfly Treasures, Fair Share, Freeset, the Salvation Army Giving Gifts and Flawless are all coming. Local industry is keen to support us with various bits, the Salvation Army is supporting with a media strategy and I can’t stop talking about it!

When is it too early to go seriously viral? To get facebooking? I feel I can’t resist the urge much longer….
